Fashion: A Form of Self-Respect

What a few months! I genuinely feel more grateful and grounded than I have in ages. If you’re feeling down, maybe it’s just because you’re not in Europe. I’ve had so many incredible experiences, and I can’t wait to share them with you. So, let’s dive into the highlights of my journey so far—from Copenhagen to Barcelona, and, of course, my home base in Rome.

First up, who would’ve guessed that Copenhagen would be my favorite place? It doesn’t get nearly the hype it deserves. The charming cafes, gorgeous gardens, and, let’s not forget—the fashion! Vintage stores lined the streets, filled with the coolest one-of-a-kind pieces. Girls were rocking slicked-back hair with Adidas in amazing colorways, and the guys looked chic in striped polos and chunky boots—half of them seemed like they’d stepped straight out of a Ralph Lauren catalog. Everywhere I looked, people had this effortless, natural style that was refreshing and inspiring. Copenhagen didn’t just meet my expectations—it completely exceeded them.

Now, let’s talk details. One accessory that caught my eye was the chic neck-tie scarf. I’m not exactly sure what it’s called, but it instantly elevates any basic outfit and adds warmth. I saw them in various shades of blue, perfectly matching denim jackets and pants.

When it comes to Halloween, Barcelona does it like no other place in Europe. While Italy was more low-key, Barcelona was all about fun and creativity. Locals flooded the streets in colorful, inventive costumes and packed the bars with wigs and vibrant hair sprays that brought the Halloween spirit to life. Though it wasn’t quite the same as back at Tulane, it was still an unforgettable experience. One trend I loved was fur jackets. These statement pieces, paired with confidence and chunky sunglasses, could be styled to look either girly or edgy—no rules on how to rock them!

Another trend popping up everywhere is knee-high socks with tall boots, which I’m obsessed with. Free People and Calzedonia have some fantastic options. Lacy or knit, knee-high socks add personality to any outfit and keep you cozy in Rome’s chilly 50-degree winters.

One thing I’ve come to appreciate is the sense of care Europeans put into their style. Fashion here feels like a form of self-respect; they dress each day for the life they aspire to have. It contrasts sharply with the American tendency toward casual, even sloppy, attire. This European mindset is a great reminder to present ourselves in ways that reflect our values and ambitions. In other words, it’s a nudge to take pride in what we wear.

I still have a few more adventures ahead, so stay tuned—Switzerland, Amsterdam, Paris, and Budapest are next! Here’s to making the most of every experience. I wish this semester could last forever.
