La Dolce Vita: Love Letter from My Italian Fashion Adventure
Just two weeks into my semester abroad, I already feel like a new version of myself—I’ve traded my American ways for a European fall, and I am more in love with life than ever before. Every cobblestone street and café corner feels like a scene from a movie. Here I am, living my Lizzie McGuire dreams in Rome. The only thing I miss more than an iced oat milk latte is my favorite place in the world, Tulane University. So, next time you're out at Fly Fridays or enjoying an after-class “bappy”, have a little extra fun for me. There's truly no place like NOLA. But honestly, who am I to complain? I'm having the time of my life in Europe and can't wait to share all things style, travel, and fashion with you. What a glamorous life I’m living as I sit on my 4-hour train ride from Sorrento.
Let me catch you up on all things fashion. Through personal observation, I've noticed that TikTok trends don’t fly here. My mentor once described her style to me as 'evergreen,' and it’s the perfect term to describe the looks here. Their style is timeless. People in Italy value investing in their clothes, prioritizing quality over quantity. A perfect pair of linen pants can be paired with almost any top and shoes, and they’re guaranteed not to be cheugy five years from now. Speaking of linen, it’s everywhere. Maybe it’s because of the current heatwave in Rome, but locals are always wearing linen dresses and maxi skirts.
Another trend that’s caught my attention is slingback shoes. Whether in sandals or kitten heels, with bows or buckles, they’re everywhere. They’ve been around for a few seasons, but I think they’re hitting their peak now. I grabbed the sickest burgundy leather pair that I can’t wait to style with some funky tights as we get closer to fall. If you’re looking to get your hands on a pair, I’d recommend checking out Reformation, which has some unique and fun options that not everyone will have.
Another accessory that elevates any Euro woman’s outfit is a chic, professional bag, especially one with top handles. If you’re like me and don’t have the funds to invest in a Birkin just yet, there are plenty of alternatives to achieve that timeless style. Notice a trend here? Timelessness. A minimalist purse without patterns or textures will last a lifetime. Whether it’s an elevated tote, shoulder bag, or top-handle bag, this will make any outfit scream quiet luxury. I prefer my bags with a bit of structure, but even the more slouchy styles have their cool factor. The leather stores in Italy have amazing quality choices, but I’ve also been browsing The Row and Staud Leather and have my eye on some sick picks.
As I wrap up this little love letter from my European adventures, I feel so lucky to be in the position I’m in living as we say in Italy, la dolce vita or “the sweet life”. Stay tuned for more love letters as I fall head over heels for every piece of Europe. I’ll be sure to keep you updated on all the style inspiration and life lessons I pick up along the way. Next up is Ibiza, and I can’t wait to take you along for the ride. Ciao for now!
Xoxo
