Style Spotlight: Tyler the Creator

When hearing the name Tyler The Creator, most people think of his iconic rap music and his various successful songs. Tyler the Creator is so much more than his music though, as he is always making fashion statements. Whether just walking down the street or on the red carpet, the Creator can normally be seen dressed in bright colors and often carries a suitcase-like bag with him on the red carpet.

Through the years, the Creator’s style has become increasingly creative, but recently he's carried with him a sort of preppy flair in all his outfits. He started out in basic streetwear items, like baggy jeans and graphic tees, but as he got more successful, his style became iconic to his followers. As time went on, the Creator slowly started adding more pops of color and fun patterns into his wardrobe. Near the release of his album Igor, the Creator even started incorporating a bleach blonde wig into his wardrobe. At this point the Creator’s style turned from skater to preppy, and his blonde wig was often seen with a brightly colored suit. From there he started exploring more in preppy clothes, with patterned vests and collars.

Although he has evolved tremendously through the years, the Creator frequently pays tribute to his original style, with basic striped shirts and sneakers, even on red carpets. A lot of these frequent switch-ups from his usual bold fashion statements have a lot to do with his several fashion brands and collaborations. In 2011, the same year the Creator released his first studio album, he also launched his own brand in collaboration with Converse, called Golf le Fleur. The shoes reflect the Creator's own style through his different eras. Some are simple and very skater-like, while others are bright and colorful and feature funky patterns and textures. Tyler the Creator also partnered his brand with Lacoste in 2019, where he brought his preppy style into the line with matching tracksuits and pastel colors. Some of the most popular items featured light pink cardigans and green vintage-style bomber jackets.

Most recently, Tyler the Creator launched Golf le Fleur's first collection not featuring any collaborations with other brands. The launch featured items that the Creator had been wearing in public, but nobody was aware that these pieces were a part of his new line. The clothes reflect a lot of the current fashion era that the Creator is in, with a soft pastel palette, some subtle prints, and suitcases as accessories.

The Creator also launched Golf Wang in 2013, which has now become an iconic streetwear brand. The Creator has frequently been seen wearing a striped Golf shirt throughout the years and even paid tribute to this original look at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards. The Creator was also featured in a Gucci campaign, alongside some other successful musicians. This campaign further established him in his rightful place as an icon in the fashion world.
