Genesis Webb: Tailoring the Iconic Chappell Roan

With the meteoric rise of queer pop sensation Chappell Roan, the world has become captivated by her bold, pioneering fashion. But where does this distinctive style come from? While Chappell dazzles with her powerful voice and talent, her unique wardrobe is not solely her creation.

On October 9th, TU Fashion had the privilege of speaking with Chappell’s talented stylist, Genesis Webb, about her creative journey and the origins of her career in fashion. Webb shared insights into her professional path, which remarkably began at the age of 14 when she was discovered on Tumblr. From reselling clothes to make ends meet, Webb has evolved into one of the most sought-after stylists in the music industry.

Webb emphasized the importance of having a muse and how it makes exploring and innovating with new styles both natural and exhilarating. She described how collaborating with someone whose tastes differ from her own pushes her to merge their preferences into powerful, transcendent looks. Webb shared that her most inspired ideas often come just before she falls asleep. She referenced her favorite TED Talk, which discusses how ideas are constantly manifesting, motivating her to pursue her creative vision wholeheartedly. Webb also offered tips for finding inspiration beyond fashion, in film and other art forms, to break out of a creative bubble.

One of Webb’s standout career moments was styling Chappell for the MTV Video Music Awards—her biggest project to date. Months of relentless dedication culminated in a defining experience that taught her valuable lessons about her work ethic and resilience. Webb reflected on the project as a symbolic chapter of hard work leading to recognition. Working alongside Chappell, both still relatively new to the industry's grand stage, she felt an encouraging camaraderie. Coming out of the experience, Webb felt equipped to take on future high-profile collaborations with confidence. She highlighted the importance of mutual inspiration, essential for any stylist-client relationship.

As for the question on everyone’s mind—where does Webb source her pieces? She revealed that she handpicks items from a variety of designers, from Rabanne and Y/Project to lesser-known, emerging brands, and even antique treasures. Webb draws significant inspiration from designer Lisa Jarvis, who taught her that while accessories can elevate an outfit, balance is key.

Webb concluded by underscoring the importance of blocking out the noise in an ever-changing fashion landscape. She is committed to making an impact by embracing creativity and fulfillment through her work. Webb’s ultimate goal is to inspire others like her to carve out their space for exploration and self-expression in this diverse, curiosity-fueled world.
