Conscious Consumerism: The Tulane Guide to Clean Beauty and Sustainable Fashion
As I prepare to leave Tulane and move out of my college house, the amount of clothes and accessories I’ve compiled over the last four years comes to mind.
I hate having such a significant accumulation of “stuff.”
The upcoming packing process reminds me of how much we collect during our years at Tulane; from date parties to carnival season, single-purpose pieces of clothing, beauty products, and accessories overflow my room. Though Tulane has many clothing swaps and takes other initiatives to repurpose these items, the constant cycle of events makes fast fashion thrive on campus.
I can’t help but wish I’d approached my shopping habits differently at the start of freshman year. It’s not just about all the money wasted but also the environmental impact these single-purpose pieces will contribute to. But when I’m in a pinch and need something urgently, supporting businesses online and in New Orleans has been my go-to this past year.
Reformation: Making Sustainability Cool
I know this is basic, but it is important to acknowledge!
Reformation was before its time and truly mastered the art of creating “trendy sustainability.”
Their recent Valentine’s campaign, “Pete Davidson, Official Boyfriend,” leveraged his status as the “go-to compliment to beautiful and talented women everywhere.” Talk about “reliable” boyfriend clothing material!
Susmies: Repeat Worthy Statement Pieces
The Barcelona-based handmade clothing and accessories brand Susmies was founded in 2021 when two women were inspired during a trip to Nepal. Susmies promotes organic lifestyle content and draws inspiration from current Barcelona streetwear. Their reversible tops are my favorite, and they come quickly — I promise.

After interning for a public relations firm specializing in beauty accounts last summer, I’ve learned how wasteful this industry is. But I was surprised to learn there are so many clean and
cruelty-free alternatives on the market, a lot that you’ve probably heard of! Located on Magazine Street, The Vibrant Market is my go-to destination for beauty products, carrying familiar brands such as Westman Atelier and Salt & Stone. Their knowledgeable staff are friendly and help you make informed decisions. Not to mention, they offer spa treatments!
Freedom Apothecary: “Radical Self-Care”

Another Magazine Street gem, Freedom Apothecary, focuses more on clean skincare. They also emphasized building relationships with small female-owned brands, vetting their products beforehand.
On a closing note, as the conscious consumer revolution continues to grow in New Orleans and beyond, we can expect this trend to stay and expand in the next few years. Innovative approaches to clean beauty and sustainable fashion transform our thinking about not just when we buy but also how we buy.
