Make the Swap: Products to Better Our Planet
As technology evolves and new brands and products are formulated, the beauty scene has become consumed by processed and packaged materials. With aesthetics and marketing playing a huge part in what we choose to purchase, it’s easy to forget how these cosmetics impact the world we live in. The Zero Waste Research Center reports that the global cosmetics industry produces over 120 billion packaging units annually. The environmental impact of cosmetics isn’t a newfound issue, with popular brands known for producing an enormous amount of waste and chemicals. Ocean pollution, air pollution, deforestation, and animal cruelty are just a few of the many problems associated with the beauty industry’s lack of sustainability. While many companies threaten our environment, there are also businesses that divert from these practices to benefit both consumers and our planet. Don’t know where to start in the transition to ethical beauty? Here are some options.
Bar Soaps
An essential tool when looking for safer products is reminding yourself that the least amount of packaging is the best amount of packaging. Body wash, deodorant, body scrubs, conditioners, and shampoos as a bar all have a formula that is cold-pressed into a solid shape rather than liquidized into a plastic bottle. An example of a brand that holds these bars is Ethique, which carries them in delicious scents and for various skin types, so by using their plastic-free, compostable products, you’re making a positive choice. For a simpler approach with the same eco-friendly impact, The Earthling Co.has many fragrance-free options.
Bamboo Razors
Most razors are created for quick use and disposal, with plastic handles and refill cartridges piling up high in landfills. Bamboo razors are lightweight and biodegradable, replacing classic metal and plastic materials. Better yet, if you purchase a reusable one, all you need to do is replace the blades when they get dull instead of constantly buying new razors altogether. The brands Public Goods and Schick both have great options that have sleek designs and are gender-inclusive.
Reusable Wipes
Cleansing face wipes are usually used and thrown out at least once - or more - daily. Instead of reaching for these at your local store, there are reusable cotton pads, makeup remover cloths, and microfiber towels that can be activated with warm water or a cleanser of your preference to have the same effect as disposable wipes. My favorite is the Original Makeup Eraser, which is exceptionally soft and durable, only requiring soap or a quick wash in between uses. Not only is it gentler on my skin and more ethical, but it also saves me a ton of money I would be wasting on wipes. Another option is Paula's Choice cotton rounds, which can be machine-washed up to 100 times.
Although it would be difficult and unrealistic to immediately cut out all your favorites or run to your local beauty store to make a heavy purchase, the next time you’re restocking, recommending, or interested in trying something new, consider making the mutually-beneficial, eco-friendly swap.
