How to Beat the NOLA Heat
For many, a fall transition means pumpkin picking, apple cider, and chunky sweaters, but for all of us living in a Southern city such as New Orleans, we get to appreciate the summer feeling a little longer. While taking a walk through Audubon Park is an assured serotonin boost, inevitably, we’ll also be hit by the uncomfortable heat; however, there are many solutions to keep ourselves looking and feeling fresh.
But, first: why aren’t our bodies equipped to handle the weather on their own? Human bodies prefer a level of humidity between 30-50%, so anything outside of that range can impact the moisture barrier that maintains our regular balance. Since Louisiana’s average humidity is 76%, it exceeds a comfortable level, forcing us to directly combat the consequences.
HAIR
Regardless of hair type, the frustrating experience of stepping outside and feeling your head transform from fashionable to alarming is universal. Humidity breaks the hydrogen bonds in our hair, causing it to morph, but managing it with hot tools can also cause breakage, split-ends, and dryness. Heat defense oils, leave-in conditioners/masks, and moisturizing scalp treatments will help restore a smooth texture and counter these common outcomes of sun and heat exposure. While these respective serums and sprays decrease frizzing, it’s hard to ignore the stickiness of damp hair. There are many cost-free styles to keep hair off our necks and flyaways from our faces, such as a slicked-back ponytail or an intricate braid. We also can’t forget the simple yet fun accessories like clips, scarves, and hats, that not only elevate our look but make the battle to tame hair a little easier.
SKIN AND BODY
Although everyone has individual sensitivities, the combination of dried-out skin and unavoidable moisture from the New Orleans weather makes having a clean base hard to maintain. In the heat, clogged skin results from bacteria being trapped inside by dead skin cells and oil, so by prioritizing topical products and daily habits, we can keep our faces vibrant. To combat heat flare-ups, products with alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids like glycolic and salicylic acid can help eliminate dirty skin cells. After the skin is prepped, exfoliate with a lip scrub to prevent cracking, and tap translucent powder on any makeup creases. In a rush, a blotting pad is an efficient tool to remove shine, so fold your own with thick tissues! A popular trend is utilizing an ice roller; it not only helps calm redness and boosts lymphatic drainage but brings your body temperature back to a normal level. A similar method is jumping into a cold shower for the perfect refresh. After the cleanse, use an antiperspirant that contains more talcum powder and less aluminum to minimize antiperspirant stains.
CLOTHING
Speaking of clothes, dressing for the occasion is a crucial element in staying cool during peak temperatures. Heatwave or not, we can remain stylish by opting for light colors that reflect the sun’s rays and breathable cotton, linen, and silk materials. Since polyester is one of the best ways to avoid sweat patches, experiment with colorful 'athleisure', tennis skirts, parachute pants, and unitards. Cropped, cut-out, or looser silhouettes are all great for airflow, so for inspiration, try a slip dress or a sleeveless garment. Attending school in New Orleans, the weather can be unpredictable. Layering pieces that are easy to throw on in an air-conditioned class but can easily be removed outside are key to adapting to any situation.
A few last reminders that should be practiced daily, but especially in Louisiana’s humidity, are to always apply a broad spectrum SPF, get plenty of rest during the night, and drink tons of water to stay hydrated! The heat can take a heavy toll, so it’s crucial to prioritize self-care to remain energized and ready to conquer the day.
